Fort Myers Pet Store

I have discovered working in a Fort Myers pet store that birds are very rapidly gaining popularity as pets. Many people own birds and believe it or not, they can also cause allergies to humans. Some of the most popular birds are Psittaciformes and Passeriformes. Passerines are known as perching birds, and they include several Canaries, Sparrows, Finches, Mynas, and more than half of the known birds species that are known for their ability to "sing". The other type are Psittacine birds and these are members of the parrot family, which include Cockatiels, Cockatoos, Parakeets, Lovebirds, Amazons, Macaws, Lories, African Grays, and Lorikeets.

Birds, no matter what type, can all cause and produce allergic reactions in humans. These allergies spring up due to the dander and dust that gathers in the bird's feathers. The actual feathers though, are not the biggest problem and they actually have very little allergic potential. The allergic problems happen when the bird flutters its wings or preens itself causing the dust to go into the air and in their cages. In some cases a bird's feathers will also molt and break into small particles while they jump around in their cage. All of this causes these allergens to blow up into the air and circulate around your home through the air conditioner, heating ducts etc. Bird droppings can also cause fungi, mold, dust, and bacteria to form and can be very harmful.

There are certain birds that do not have the preening gland or on which this gland is very small. The birds that do not have this gland are some of the members of the psittacine family. These birds produce a considerable amount of powder on their feathers. The powder that these birds produce can cause a lot of problems to people that have problems with allergies. Some of the most common problems are asthma, breathing problems etc. So these birds are not very good for allergic people.
