Housebreaking a Puppy

Just as you wouldn't want to do your needs in your room or bed, the same applies for puppies. Puppies prefer "going" in unused areas in the house or outside in an open garden etc. In a house, a puppy might use a specific room to do his "needs" in such as the kitchen, which seems to be a common place.

  • In general the amount of "eliminating" a puppy will have to do largely depends on how active he is. Abrupt changes in movement from an inactive state to an active state will most likely cause him to want to use the bathroom. After your dog has eaten, wakes up, plays, goes on a walk, etc etc, take him out so he can "go".
  • Puppies pick their toilet areas so keep an eye that he does not choose your living room carpet or an undesired place in the house. The owner should choose the puppy's bathroom spot very carefully. The best areas are outside in the garden in the grass or dirt.
  • Make sure to take your puppy out enough so he can do his needs. If you need to go out and leave him home alone, place him in an enclosed area with a "potty spot".
